She will share with you her experience in the field and the importance of prescriptive authority for improved behavioral mental health access.

About Judith Steinman, PhD

Dr. Steinman is the Immediate Past President of APA’s American Society for the Advancement of Pharmacotherapy (Division 55) for 2020. She has been the director of the CSPP-Alliant International University, M.S. in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) program since 2017. Steinman also served as the Coordinator of the MSCP program at University of Hawai`i - Hilo’s Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy.

As chair of the Division 55 Training Program Director Council and as a member of the Diversity, Research, Bylaws and Membership Councils and Committees, Dr. Steinman was one of two lead authors of the Division’s Specialty Petition to APA’s CRSPPP, allowing Clinical Psychopharmacology to be recognized as a specialty and laying the path towards Board Certification with ABPP. She served previously as chair of the Hawaiʻi Psychological Association’s RxP Sub-Committee and as a member of the Political Action Committee board. She is actively engaged in efforts to bring prescriptive authority for qualified psychologists to Hawai`i and around the country.

New Horizons: Clinical Psychopharmacology as a Recognized APA Specialty and Moving Towards Board Certification

On August 8, 2020, the American Society for the Advancement of Pharmacotherapy‘s petition to designate Clinical Psychopharmacology as a Specialty was approved. This historic accomplishment sets the stage for Clinical Psychopharmacologists who are licensed to prescribe to become board certified. Academic and experiential pathways to becoming a Prescribing Clinical Psychopharmacologist will be discussed.

Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology in the Era of COVID19

The pace at which the health and financial consequences of COVID19 have pervaded society has left us in an overwhelming state of stress. Science and medicine have generated theories that normally are tested over time, but the precipitous climb of mortality and morbidity left us scrambling for answers and hanging our hopes on treatments that ultimately proved ineffective or in some cases hazardous. This presentation will parse out the scientific facts from theory regarding neurological sequelae of COVID19 exposure and how medications prescribed for mental health conditions may interact with treatments used for COVID19.

Ethnic and Cultural Disparities in Pharmacotherapy for Mental Health Disorders

Factors such as ethnicity, gender, age, and skin color have a substantial impact on how patients respond to behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy. Influences from cultural perceptions to differences in liver enzyme polymorphisms can assist Prescribing Psychologists in determining optimal medication choices or when behavioral therapy may be more suitable than pharmacotherapy. Attendees will gain an understanding of the complex cultural and genetic factors that affect medication response.
